Island Leisure is committed to our social responsibility to care for our environment and strive to use highly ecological building material in the construction of our buildings. We always consider the environmental implications of our actions, and the use of sustainable material ensures we are looking ahead to the future..
Our main material is sustainable, natural and renewable - wood. We select our timber from the very best suppliers. Sustainable forest harvesting and compulsory replanting of replacement trees is of high priority to them and us.
We incorporate floor to ceiling windows as much as possible to allow sunlight, thereby reducing the need for electric lighting and gas/electric heating.
Double glazed windows and doors, and the use of low energy glass, which increases the thermability of glass, are also instrumental in the conservation of power.
All walls, ceilings and floors are fully insulated with Isover insulation. It delivers the best combination of functions in thermal and acoustic comfort, fire safe products and environmental protection. Various studies show that our use of insulation can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our use of glass wool saves energy and consumes over 100 x fewer chemicals than required to produce it, thus reducing acidification, ‘acid rain’.
Thanks to the Energy Saving Scotland small business programme, we have managed to become a cleaner and greener operation - and the business is making considerable cost savings in the process.
We installed a biomass system to replace electric heating in our spray booth. By installing the wood waste heater system, we are making substantial savings per year on electricity and as a company, committing to reducing our carbon footprint. We have also reduced the amount of waste wood sent to landfill.
As a result of the Energy Audit carried out, we have also installed a number of presence detectors for the office and factory lighting.
Where possible, water based paint treatments and structural glues, which contain fewer toxins and chemicals, are used.
Every little bit helps and our installation of dual flush toilets, low energy white goods and 100% wool carpets also help make a difference.
